A single mistake rarely causes athletes to unravel. More often, it's how the brain interprets that mistake that determines what happens next.

Why One Mistake Often Leads to Another
Every coach has seen it. An athlete misses a serve, shakes their head, and suddenly nothing looks right. Their passing gets tighter, their decisions slow down, and confidence seems to disappear in a matter of minutes. It feels like one mistake caused everything that followed.
In reality, it usually isn't the mistake itself. It's what the athlete's brain starts predicting next.
Our brains are constantly trying to guess what's about to happen. Most of the time that's incredibly helpful. It allows experienced athletes to react quickly and play almost automatically. But after a mistake, those predictions can change. Instead of expecting success, the athlete starts expecting another error, disappointment, or criticism. That shift changes what they notice, what they think about, and ultimately how they perform.
This is why two athletes can make the exact same mistake and respond completely differently. One thinks, "Shake it off. Next ball." The other starts wondering, "What's wrong with me?" The first athlete updates and moves on. The second gets stuck trying to protect themselves from making another mistake. Before long, they're playing cautiously instead of confidently.
The goal of mental training isn't to stop mistakes from happening. That's impossible. The goal is to help athletes recover before one mistake becomes the story of the match. Skills like pausing, accepting reality, resetting attention, and returning to the present interrupt that downward spiral. They give the brain new information: I'm okay. I'm still in this. Play the next point.
The best athletes aren't the ones whose brains never predict trouble. They're the ones who recover quickly when those predictions turn out to be wrong. They don't fight the wave of competition. They adjust to it. That's why in MPSS we say, performance follows regulation. When athletes regain their footing, their skills usually return with them.
